These games were played on courtyard floors, on chalk boards and on carrom tables at the tea stall. Here is a little of their story.
Ludo is the modern, simplified form of India's ancient Pachisi, patented in England in 1896, and today the most played board game in Bangladeshi homes and phones.
A Bengal classic of the alquerque family, also known as Mogal-Pathan: a 5×5 lined grid with a triangle at each end. The Bangla Academy description treats captures as optional; GutiVerse lets you choose.
The smaller 5×5 board without triangles, played with twelve pieces a side, is widely remembered across rural Bangladesh.
In the Bengal game the goats start in four stacks of five and a tiger that jumps a stack takes only the top goat, unlike Nepal's Bagh-Chal. The Bagh-Chal style is available as an option.
Snakes and ladders descends from the Indian game Moksha Patam, where ladders were virtues and snakes were vices. In Bangladesh it is simply Shap Ludu, loved by every age.
Carrom boards fill tea stalls, clubs and verandas across Bangladesh. Local rules differ; GutiVerse uses the common queen-cover and striker-foul rules.
Cowrie-shell race games such as Chowka Bhara and Ashta-Kashte were played across South Asia. 'Char kori' means four cowries; our rules follow those games, adapted for the phone.
Every Bangladeshi school notebook has a kata kuti grid in its back pages. We added bigger boards and four-player games.
Daba has deep roots in the subcontinent, from chaturanga to today's busy Bangladeshi chess clubs and grandmasters.
Traditional rules differ between regions and families. Where sources disagree we say so in the game and offer options. Know a local rule we should add? Tell us.
